Engineering sheet plan and notes arrangement

Many engineers have not discovered this, but a contractor taught me that it is very unwieldy for us to place the most important part of a sheet, namely the plan view, near the staples. When the wind is blowing on a project site, the less a plan has to be unrolled, the better. So it is always best for us to place the most important part of plan sheets far from the staple/binding edge.

Property part 1

A shipfull of pioneer explorers dropped anchor in an uncharted cove and made camp. Every day people were found picking berries at a nearby berry patch.

One day at the patch the Harvester family appeared with huge baskets and began to harvest berries systematically. On seeing this, Objecter said, "That's not cool," to which Adam Harvester replied, "You're not the boss of us."

Hearing this, Asserter said, "You don't own this patch."

Now, by no fault of their own, the Harvesters were uncommonly large people. Mother Harvester was aware of this privilege and loath to press it, so she felt called to try explaining. "Of course not. These aren't all for us. We plan to carry them to the camps and trade them for things we are short of at our camp."

"But if you harvest them all," objected Asserter, "there won't be enough for us."

"Nonsense!" exclaimed Father Harvester. "You'll be able to stay at camp and trade us for berries. There will be berries for everybody."

NPS Global 1.0 - My first explanation of where NPS came from and how it became a reality this week

I guess I need to start telling the NPS story: No owners, Part-time freelancers, Small self-managing teams. The t-shirt shown summarizes the NPS values. There is a non-owned corporate account, about 8 people on the first team, and a pretty good history of projects through the pipeline since June. You could hire us, join us, advise us, help us, or copy us. At the moment, what we need most is another P.E. or more.

Salt Lake City nurse roughly arrested for following Supreme Court decision - Payne and the Book of Mormon's Nephi

The story has been in the headlines for days now with amazing staying power. It's the story of Salt Lake City police detective Jeff Payne's rough arrest of nurse Alex Wubbels for refusing to let him draw blood from an unconscious crash victim. Without regard to the facts of the religious background of Payne, the parallels of the story with the beloved LDS scriptural story of Nephi and the Plates of Laban are striking.

I don't know if this has been discredited or anything bad like that. But this is what I used to begin healing my gum disease.

There is a Grown-up

There is a grown-up at home
Telling me what to do.
Do I hate the grown-up?
The grown-up is wise.
The grown-up loves me.

I am safe in the grown-up's care.
I love the grown-up.
I am thankful.
I am....

Yasi Oral Irrigator review

I was sent a free Yasi Oral Irrigator Model YS831 to write about. I made a video review, and this post is to summarize my review. The only comparison I have for this irrigator is my Waterpik Model WP-100W irrigator, which is the third of the same model I have bought.

Update from Yasi: this is a travel irrigator, and they also have an irrigator with a much larger tank here: This model I reviewed is comparable to this Waterpik model , and I suspect the only unfavorable comparison with that unit would be the uncomfortable standard tips included with this Yasi irrigator.

Introduction to the Real Estate Non-commoditability Market Inefficiency

What I mean by non-commoditability is the inability of some types of merchandise to act like commodities in markets. It's too long a word. Maybe you can tell me the correct word or a better word.

How I made Youtube videos in May 2017

Yesterday I used CamStudio and Youtube/editor to make a Civil 3D Retention Basin video. CamStudio worked great, but I could not remember how I edit out dead spots and mistakes before.

Now today I started CamStudio and all my options are lost. So let's see what I have to do.

-You must not exit with the X or settings are not saved. In fact, they may be reset. I seem to recall this from my previous stint as a videographer.
-Set the Cursor options to greenish and as large as possible with visual click feedback.
-Installed CamStudio Lossless Codec v1.5 and set it current.
-Right-click visual feedback doesn't work.
-I am using version 2.7.4 Build on Mercurial release: r354
-I installed and am using CamStudio Lossless Codec v1.5
-I set the frame rate to 8/sec so I would not look so mouse hyper.

I am trying to use Avidemux to edit the dead parts from the video.
-Avidemux did not create a shortcut. I have to open it from the Program Files folder.
-Not too pleased with Avidemux. Only trims to index frames.

I ended up making the videos really short and doing no editing.

How to size and calculate a simple storm water retention basin on an existing terrain with Civil 3D

Assuming you already know the Retention Volume Required (it's an Arizona thing), you need a fast way to design a retention basin if possible. Complex retention basins in tight areas have to be maximized according to the available room. Then Civil 3D volumes below a level HW surface have to be taken to determine the volume. And there is not much you can do to get more volume without spending money on retaining walls or underground retention. But some other basins are in wide open areas, and they can be relatively simple shapes. For those you need a fast way to get them drawn to the required volume.

HEC-RAS 2D Land Cover from AutoCAD

I had a bit of trouble getting a Land Cover map from AutoCAD to HEC-RAS today. I made a map, but HEC-RAS kept telling me the file "has 0 features". It turns out I needed to set the project projection to the projection exported from AutoCAD with the Land Cover map.

How Roughness and Loss Coefficients are Applied to Reaches in HEC-RAS

It's really hard to find a clear explanation of how roughness and loss coefficients are applied to reaches in HEC-RAS.  I ran extensive scenario testing today and here are my results.

Automated AutoCAD GIS export to Maricopa County DDMSW hydrology

I have finished the first version of the open source work-flow optimized application at AutoCAD Wiki.  It works like this:

Tilde conflict between AIA/NCS layer name specification and AutoCAD wildcards

National CAD Standard (AIA) layer name specification version 6 (2014) allows us to use only alphabetic and numeric characters and "~" (tilde) in layer names.  But the tilde has a wildcard meaning in AutoCAD.  What are we to do?
